Thursday, September 18th in the TA ( HCL 8 )

6:00 PM to 6:40 – “England Their England: Monsters, Maniacs, and Moore.

Though not the only documentary about the comic book author Alan Moore, it is the only one to feature Moore onstage fielding accusatory questions from his own toughest critic: himself. The short film focuses mostly on Moore’s larger influences and his desire to create challenging and thought-provoking works, but also features readings from his books and addresses the man’s irrational hatred of ducks.

Moore discusses the shift from the public perception of comic books as a childish diversion to the acceptance of comics as a culturally relevant artform, and his own attempt to portray the struggle between mankind and nature through Swamp Thing.

The Pharmacratic Inquisition

2 11 2007

image019.jpg

Wednesday, November 7th in the TA ( HCL 8 )

Forward Escape is back with one of the most blasphemous and heretical documentaries to date. If you’ve ever wondered whether Jesus Christ was a psychedelic fungi here’s your chance to find out. In truth, this documentary is a wonderful tour through Astrotheology, Religions, Shamanism, and the theories of John Marco Allegro, the first British representative on the international team who worked on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

5 PM- The Pharmacratic Inquisition (120 min)

Thousands of years ago, in the pre monarchic era, psychedelic/entheogenic substances where publicly known world wide, and respected for their ability to bring forth the divine, Yahweh, God, The Great Spirit, etc. by the many cultures who used them. Often the entire tribe or community would partake in the Entheogenic rites. These rites were often used in initiation into adulthood, for healing, to help guide the community in the decision process, and to bring the direct religious experience to anyone seeking it, that might take these psychedelic sacraments properly. Crusades were fought, Inquisitions were enacted, and the so-called “Pagan” or country people lost their lives for their Shamanic beliefs. This happened not only in Europe and the Middle East, but in the Americas under the Spanish Inquisition as well.

American Drug War: The Last White Hope

 Drug War

Wednesday, October 10th in the TA

The best documentary you’ll see on the American Drug War! It’s a pre-release and produced by Sacred Cow (the studio behind the works of the legendary comedian Bill Hicks). You’ll be kicking yourself in the face if you miss this.

5 PM- American Drug War: The Last White Hope (120 min)

35 years after Nixon started the war on drugs, we have over one million non-violent drug offenders living behind bars. The War on Drugs has become the longest and most costly war in American history, the question has become, how much more can the country endure? Inspired by the death of four family members from “legal drugs” Texas filmmaker Kevin Booth sets out to discover why the Drug War has become such a big failure. Three and a half years in the making, the film follows gang members, former DEA agents, CIA officers, narcotics officers, judges, politicians, prisoners and celebrities. Most notably the film befriends Freeway Ricky Ross; the man many accuse for starting the Crack epidemic, who after being arrested discovered that his cocaine source had been working for the CIA. AMERICAN DRUG WAR shows how money, power and greed have corrupted not just drug pushers and dope fiends, but an entire government. More importantly, it shows what can be done about it. This is not some ‘pro-drug’ stoner film, but a collection of expert testimonials from the ground troops on the front lines of the drug war, the ones who are fighting it and the ones who are living it.After 4 years of production including several sold out test screenings in New York, Austin & Los Angeles, the final version of American Drug War “the last white hope” is locked and loaded.

8:00- Aleister Crowley: The Wickedest Man in the World (BBC)

He is perhaps best known today for his occult writings, especially The Book of the Law, the central sacred text of Thelema. Crowley was also an influential member in several occult organizations, including the Golden Dawn, the Argenteum Astrum, and Ordo Templi Orientis.

Other interests and accomplishments were wide-ranging—he was a chess player, mountain climber, poet, painter, astrologer, hedonist, drug experimenter, and social critic.

Although this documentary is heavily biased against Crowley, it shows a great deal about his life. Dubbed “The Wickedest Man in the World” and “The Beast”, many still see him today as an incarnation of pure evil.

He influenced: The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Graham Bond, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Grant Morrison, Manic Street Preachers, Tool, The Rolling Stones, Pantera, John Frusciante, Primal Scream, Alphaville, Klaxons, Wicca, The Hippies, Robert Anton Wilson, and countless others.

Next semester I will begin a weekly video night featuring recorded psychotherapy sessions for psychology students. I need your support to obtain funding so please come!

8:30 PM – Feminist Therapy

In Feminist Therapy, Dr. Laura S. Brown demonstrates this integrative approach to psychotherapy. Feminist therapy may superficially resemble other forms of psychotherapy, but the therapy’s basis in feminist political analysis and scholarship on the psychology of women and gender make this a unique and valuable approach for both female and male clients. In this session, Dr. Brown works with a woman recently convicted of narcotics charges. She helps the client to discern how past experiences have shaped her current negative self-narrative.

9:45 PM – Process Experiential Psychotherapy

In Process Experiential Psychotherapy: An Emotion-Focused Approach, Dr. Leslie S. Greenberg demonstrates this deeply empathic, emotion-focused approach to treatment. In process experiential psychotherapy, the therapist works to guide the client’s affective and cognitive processing of experience through the use of appropriate active interventions that facilitate the resolution of painful emotions. In this session, Dr. Greenberg works with a 34-year-old man who is depressed. Using empathy and in-session activities, they explore the sources of the client’s current affective state.

8:00 PM – Censoring of Bill Hicks

Bill Hicks
Bands such as Tool, Radiohead, and Rage Against the Machine made tributes to this legendary stand up comedian. This documentary is a rare insight into the battle against censorship that the great Bill Hicks waged against corporate America and its mainstream media for the better part of 15 years.
Hosted by Janeane Garofalo, it documents Bill’s transition from a non- drinking, non- smoking, straight laced funny man, to a hard drinking, hard smoking, drug taking angry ranter, to the happy and finally, peaceful and insightful man of much wisdom.
