5 PM and 6 PM – There is a Policeman Inside All Our Heads: He Must Be Destroyed (60 min)
In the 1960s, a radical group of psychotherapists challenged the influence of Freudian ideas in America. They were inspired by the ideas of Wilhelm Reich, a pupil of Freud’s, who had turned against him and was hated by the Freud family. He believed that the inner self did not need to be repressed and controlled. It should be encouraged to express itself.

Out of this came a political movement that sought to create new beings free of the psychological conformity that had been implanted in people’s minds by business and politics.

This programme shows how this rapidly developed in America through self-help movements like Werber Erhard’s Erhard Seminar Training – into the irresistible rise of the expressive self: the Me Generation.

But the American corporations soon realised that this new self was not a threat but their greatest opportunity. It was in their interest to encourage people to feel they were unique individuals and then sell them ways to express that individuality. To do this they turned to techniques developed by Freudian psychoanalysts to read the inner desires of the new self.

5 PM and 6 PM – The Century of the Self: The Engineering of Consent (60 min)

The beginning briefly recaps the previous episode so don’t worry if you missed the first part!

Description: The Engineering of Consent

The programme explores how those in power in post-war America used Freud’s ideas about the unconscious mind to try and control the masses.

Politicians and planners came to believe Freud’s underlying premise – that deep within all human beings were dangerous and irrational desires and fears. They were convinced that it was the unleashing of these instincts that had led to the barbarism of Nazi Germany. To stop it ever happening again they set out to find ways to control this hidden enemy within the human mind.

Sigmund Freud’s daughter, Anna, and his nephew, Edward Bernays, provided the centrepiece philosophy. The US government, big business, and the CIA used their ideas to develop techniques to manage and control the minds of the American people. But this was not a cynical exercise in manipulation. Those in power believed that the only way to make democracy work and create a stable society was to repress the savage barbarism that lurked just under the surface of normal American life.

The Pharmacratic Inquisition

Wednesday, November 7th in the TA ( HCL 8 )

Forward Escape is back with one of the most blasphemous and heretical documentaries to date. If you’ve ever wondered whether Jesus Christ was a psychedelic fungi here’s your chance to find out. In truth, this documentary is a wonderful tour through Astrotheology, Religions, Shamanism, and the theories of John Marco Allegro, the first British representative on the international team who worked on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

5 PM- The Pharmacratic Inquisition (120 min)

Thousands of years ago, in the pre monarchic era, psychedelic/entheogenic substances where publicly known world wide, and respected for their ability to bring forth the divine, Yahweh, God, The Great Spirit, etc. by the many cultures who used them. Often the entire tribe or community would partake in the Entheogenic rites. These rites were often used in initiation into adulthood, for healing, to help guide the community in the decision process, and to bring the direct religious experience to anyone seeking it, that might take these psychedelic sacraments properly. Crusades were fought, Inquisitions were enacted, and the so-called “Pagan” or country people lost their lives for their Shamanic beliefs. This happened not only in Europe and the Middle East, but in the Americas under the Spanish Inquisition as well.

8:00- Aleister Crowley: The Wickedest Man in the World (BBC)

He is perhaps best known today for his occult writings, especially The Book of the Law, the central sacred text of Thelema. Crowley was also an influential member in several occult organizations, including the Golden Dawn, the Argenteum Astrum, and Ordo Templi Orientis.

Although this documentary is heavily biased against Crowley, it shows a great deal about his life. Dubbed “The Wickedest Man in the World” and “The Beast”, many still see him today as an incarnation of pure evil.

He influenced: The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Graham Bond, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Grant Morrison, Manic Street Preachers, Tool, The Rolling Stones, Pantera, John Frusciante, Primal Scream, Alphaville, Klaxons, Wicca, The Hippies, Robert Anton Wilson, and countless others.

Hosted by Janeane Garofalo, it documents Bill’s transition from a non- drinking, non- smoking, straight laced funny man, to a hard drinking, hard smoking, drug taking angry ranter, to the happy and finally, peaceful and insightful man of much wisdom.
